Hello beautiful goddess

We've connected previously about {The Illusion of Happiness}. How we need to take action today towards what we really want, rather than dreaming about the promise of being happy tomorrow.

We've also touched on slowing the pace of our daily lives down and not engaging in the {Glorification of Busyness}. 

But nothing has driven the message of Mindfulness home more than my new yoga class. For the past few weeks, I have been teaching a group of students with intellectual and physical disabilities. Guiding them through basic stretches and poses, with a very slow and soothing meditation at the end. There is no way you can show up to class with a plan in mind. They are full of life, energy and above all - spontaneity. 

Half way through a pose, I may lose one or two of them, as they wander off on different tangents. Perhaps when we're standing, I may get a high five out of the blue. But perhaps my favourite 'interruption' of all occurs when someone inevitably begins a fake snore during our meditation.

This group of students have become very close to my heart in a short period of time. And it hit me with a bang on the way home today as to why - they are the personification of living in the momentWhen they chant 'Om', believe me when I tell you, it comes directly from their heart. When they smile half way during a pose, it's because they feel true joy. Seeing them as who they really are, rather than for their perceived 'limitations', is the greatest gift I or any for that matter, can give them.

When we hear teachers, such as Eckhart Tolle, bestowing the virtues of The Power of Now, I understand how it can seem unattainable. Our minds are literally on the go 24/7 it would seem, and modern technology as helpful as it is, provides us with around the clock access to information. Below are two exercises I take this precious group of students through to get back in touch with their bodies:

1. Place your right hand on your heart, your left hand on your belly. Gently close your eyes. Take 5 deep, long, slow breaths. When you exhale, allow your mouth to make a gentle "ahhh" sound. Focus your mind on the exhalation when the mind starts to wander. Allow all the stagnant energy in your body to be released.

2. When you're sitting behind your computer, or perhaps on the commute home, really take the time to feel your feet. Twist your ankles in one direction for a few rounds, and then in the opposite direction. Place them gently back on the ground, and feel your toes/the ball of your foot/your heel, and then the whole of your foot together. Feel the socks around your feet, and your shoes enveloping everything. Imagine a sensation of warmth starting in your feet and spreading all the way to the top of your head.

Becoming mindful doesn't have to be as serious or as hard as we make it out to be - my students have definitely taught me that. There is just as much bliss to be received from a deep belly laugh when we let ourselves go, as there is in a 10 or 20 minute meditation practice.
